History student Caelynn Creed is consumed with studies and her work at the city museum. Her routine life shatters when she is arrested for a robbery at the museum, and Caelynn learns her father has been keeping secrets from her: she is the key for a brutal cult to gain the magic they need to take over Thelios. If they claim the planet, they will become lords and oppress the world.
“Why are you arresting us?” Caelynn ventured after a moment.
The commander remained silent a moment, typing on a flexible screen adhered to the sleeve of his uniform. “I’m not at liberty to disclose any information, Ms. Creed.” He replied without looking up from his work.
“Well, it can’t just be because we’re volunteers at the museum,” she persisted. “That’s what this is about, right? The museum attack? You have the entire city locked down so I don’t imagine overdue library fines are high priority this morning.”
“I’m still not at liberty to disclose any information at this time.” The commander kept his gaze on the small screen.
“Surely you aren’t rounding up all the Academy volunteers.” Caelynn pressed. “I mean, that’s dozens of people who are really just loosely associated with the museum as part of our studies.” She shook her head. “Bashing in doors just because we’re history students? It doesn’t make sense. There has to be something more for you to come and drag Brayson and me to the station.”
The commander finally turned in his seat to look at her, his gaze analytical. She thought there was a hint of amusement in his eyes. “Are you normally so stubborn?”
Caelynn tried to look affronted, but the truth was she knew she was being persistent. She considered it one of her defining traits. She averted her gaze to hide her contrition.
“I’ll assume that is a yes.”
